New safety road rules giving trucking companies troubles

0 New safety road rules giving trucking companies troublesAfter 14 years of working on the road as a long-haul truck driver, Edgar Galvan decided to take another route and opened his own trucking company in Los Fresnos, Galvan’s National Carrier.

The six fleet trucking business transports mostly heavy machinery and steel to 48 states.

However, Galvan said that in the 3 years he’s been in business, things have gradually gotten tougher.

First came the rise in fuel prices, and now Galvan said, road rules are getting meticulously strict.

The new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration laws that went into effect in 2010, he said, could force small companies like his to shut down and leave truckers out of a job.

“(If a driver) wakes up and doesn’t (fill out) his log book and just drives, (if) he gets stopped,” Galvan said, “they’ll issue him a warning or a citation that will go on his license (and) it will deduct points on his license and it will also affect the safety rating of the company.”

Galvan said under the new laws, law enforcement officials will be able to warn or cite Truck Drivers for anything from a chip on a windshield, no wiper fluid or a strap out of place.

If a truck driver racks up a certain amount of points for these sort of violations, their licenses will get suspended for two years, Galvan said.

For trucking companies, too many points can be disastrous.

“When we get audited they’ll go through everything,” Galvan said. “The government sees that we have so many citations for that company, so they audit the company and either we get a big fine and pay it and continue, or they shut us down.”

Galvan said he agrees with keeping drivers safe on the road since they are hauling tons of cargo, but he adds that tacking on these types of violations against a driver and a company is unheard of and “ridiculous.”

There are even more changes coming in the near future, like reducing the number of hours truckers can drive each day, and Galvan said he just hopes his company can stay afloat.

“What they want to do is, I guess get rid of the small companies and keep the big companies out there,” Galvan said.

Hi my name is Issac Phillips and I’m our contractor recruiter here at Crete Carrier and Shaffer Trucking. My involvement in the owner operator process is from day one. Between running the reference checks, getting the driver application approved, getting the credit application approved, bringing on any outside trucks and also selling trucks to our current company drivers. Someone would first contact me if they were bringing on a truck from the outside already a current owner operator or company driver thats interested in becoming an owner operator and purchasing a truck through the company. All drivers who are interested in becoming and owner operator would visit with the recruiting department and ultimately myself to get the ball rolling as far as the credit application and talk about the current trucks that we have available. Hello, my name is Jeff Girdner. I’m an asset manager at Crete Carrier Corporation. Almost everyday I hear from different Owner Operators that I know, I talk to a lot of them through the Qualmcomm and a lot of them on the phone will give me a call just to see how things are going. But I always keep them informed on how the freight is moving and the weather, different things like that. I have strictly Owner operators, that’s all I deal with is owner operators. The way the relationship grows is by going through things. They have different things they ned, maybe a home issue or, I had another situation where one of my drivers was going to be a grandpa and needed to get home. When you make those things happen for someone, you develop a trust with theses guys and gals. A lot of times when an owner operator comes up to my window to see me on the second floor, I just bring them over to my desk and sit them down and visit with them. They’re just people trying to earn a living just like me, and I want them to be successful and I think at Crete Carrier they can be successful and I just enjoy being part of that. Crete’s a good company, and I’ve been here a long time. If you want to get out there and work and run, you can make a good living. Crete Carrier 800-998-2221. Owner Operator Trucking Jobs.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that Crete Carrier actually started with four Owner Operators. We were majority Owner Operators until the late eighties. We’ve always had Owner Operators at Crete Carrier and we want to continue to grow that fleet back to the numbers that we used to have. When an Owner Operator leases a truck onto Crete Carrier or Shaffer Trucking, he’s partnering with us. And his success if Crete carrier’s success. The advantage divers have with becoming and Owner Operator with our company is the fact that they can get a company truck the they know has been taken care of, maybe a truck that they’ve driven since it was brand new. We’ve got owners that average in the 10 11 12 13 thousand miles a month, but if you don’t want to stay out from home that long we can still average in that 9,000 miles a month if that’s what you’re after. As an Owner Operator at Crete you have a little bit more of a choice with what you want to do. They are their own businessmen, they control that business they have some more say so and some more freedom. If you choose not to go into the New York City are, you don’t have to with Crete Carrier. Our new pay package is very competitive. We upped all of our loaded miles on average about 6 cents a mile we also increased our empty miles by 16 cents. By using our fuel solution, the discounts can range anywhere from 3 cents to 70 cents per gallon. Our purchase program is an outright purchase. Your name is on the title from day one, there’s some different tax benefits that way. Mos companies have a typical walkaway lease program where there’s zero down walk away at any time, but you never really own that truck, even if you go through with the lease because there’s such big buyout at the end of that program that you can’t actually afford to buy the truck yourself. Ours is better because at the end of that loan term, you own that truck. There’s no balloon payment at the end. It’s just like going out and buying a car and getting a personal load through your bank, once that final payment is done the truck is yours. All drivers who are interested in becoming Owner Operators would visit with the recruiting department and ultimately myself to get the ball rolling with a credit application and to talk about the different trucks that we have available.
